CEO: Canon David Channon
David has over 20 years’ experience of teaching in a variety of schools across the primary phase. He has held successful leadership roles including two headships in two different local authorities.
David has worked in local authority advisory roles in both Derbyshire and Sheffield and has vast experience of working with schools in varying contexts, especially those causing concern. During his time in these roles David became an accredited School Improvement Partner (SIP) and Local Consultant for Improvement (LCI)
David has carried out numerous Section 5 inspections over the years on behalf of Ofsted and as such has a good knowledge of the Ofsted framework. David has extensive networks throughout the UK with Teaching Schools, other MATS, Local Authorities and Diocesan Boards of Education. He recently completed The Executive Educators Programme for Chief Executive Officers. David has been subject to enhanced DBS disclosures.
Director of Education and Deputy CEO: Mark Mallender
Mark has experience of teaching in a variety of Primary settings. He was Headteacher of two Church Primary Schools over a period of ten years. Both schools were placed on the outstanding provider list as result of the Ofsted grade awarded under Mark’s leadership. His schools were also graded as ‘Outstanding Church Schools’ under the Section 48 SIAMS inspection framework on three different occasions during Mark’s tenure.
Mark has worked as a senior advisor for a local authority and has experience of working with a variety of schools, some of which are in extremely challenging contexts. Mark has carried out Section 5 inspections on behalf of Ofsted since 2010 and has led Section 5 inspections since 2012. He is also qualified to lead Section 8 inspections on behalf of Ofsted.
Mark has extensive links across the East Midlands with Teaching Schools and other successful MATs and is committed to effective partnership and collaborative working. Mark has been subject to enhanced DBS disclosures.
Finance Director: Richard Wetherall
Richard has been supporting the finance team in Derby Diocesan Academy Trust over the last 2 years and has provided additional finance support to newly formed Diocesan Multi Academy Trusts across the country. Having been at Lloyds Bank for 25 years, most recently as a Commercial Director, Richard is able to provide invaluable experience and knowledge both strategically and financially. Richard is a member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and holds formal Financial Planning Certificate qualifications in addition to his commercial financial experience.
Richard has taken over the Finance Director responsibilities with Derby Diocesan Academy Trust from March 2017.
Since taking over this role Richard has managed the implementation of a new, consistent finance system across the trust and developed improved monitoring and oversight procedures relating to the financial management and governance within the trust. Richard has been subject to enhanced DBS disclosures.
Head of School Improvement: Declan McCauley
Declan has experience of teaching across both the primary and secondary sector. Throughout his career he has held a number of senior roles. He was a headteacher for 14 years of a Church School. Declan has worked as a School Improvement Partner for two different Local Authorities and as such has vast experience of working with schools in a variety of contexts. Declan has been a section 48 inspector for Birmingham Diocese.
Declan has led section 5 and section 8 inspections on behalf of Ofsted since 2009. Before joining DDAT Declan held the position of Principal at CFBT, one of Ofsted’s three inspection service providers. As Principal, Declan quality assured inspection and line managed a team of over 120 inspectors. Declan oversaw the training of lead inspectors as well as leading his own inspections and carrying out section 8 monitoring visits. As such Declan has vast knowledge of the Ofsted Inspection Framework. Declan has been subject to enhanced DBS disclosures.
Deputy Director of Education and School’s Advisor, DDBE: Dr Alison Brown
Alison works for the DBE, but her skills, knowledge and understanding are well used by all our Church Schools in DDAT.
Alison has taught across the primary phase in number of schools across two very different local authorities. In 2004 Alison was appointed as the Deputy Director of Education and School’s Advisor for the Derby Diocesan Board of Education. This is a role which she still passionately carries out today overseeing the RE and Collective Worship in 110 schools throughout the Diocese and ensuring that they uphold their Christian distinctiveness, whilst promoting quality spiritual development across the curriculum. Alison also carries out training in a number of community schools.
Alison provides training for schools within the Diocese, but is also called on to speak, lead training and run workshops both nationally and internationally. She has fostered strong relationships with other Dioceses and other well respected authors and experts in her field throughout the UK. Alison has also formed strong links with other schools from Kolkata in India and organises regular visits between Derbyshire schools and Kolkata schools.
Alison manages the SIAMS inspections across the Diocese and is a critical reader of section 48 reports. Alison has been a trustee for the Stapleford Centre and is on the editorial group for Grove Education Series. In 2016 Alison published a book called ‘How to see Collective Worship in You’ and was awarded a Doctorate in Edcuation (EdD). Alison has been subject to enhanced DBS disclosures.
Deputy Business Director: Shakher Khaliq
Shak has over 10 years’ experience of working in the finance field. He has a degree in Accounting and Finance and is an ACCA qualified accountant.
Shak has worked in the Diocese for 3 years and understands the growth and funding structure of schools, academies and the Diocese. He will be managing the budget and forecast for DBE whilst overseeing the growth and impact on DDAT.
Shak will be supervising the monthly reporting for the schools in DDAT and implementing management accounts to provide consistency across the board as well as improving the year end audit process. Part of the role involves working with groups of small schools and academies to help model financial alternatives that promote sustainability through collaboration. Shak will be implementing and managing the use of Apprenticeship Levy to help support the schools in DDAT.
Shak will also be supporting the Accounting Officer in routine duties as required as well as maintaining the Land and Buildings belonging to both the DBE and DDAT. He will work alongside the Finance Director and Finance Manager of DDAT to improve financial systems for all church schools and academies. Shak has been subject to enhanced DBS disclosures.
Senior HR Adviser: Sara Tucker
Sara has 20 years’ experience working in Human Resources, primarily across Local Government departments (Social Services and Education), as well as the Emergency Services. She has a degree in Psychology and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. She has worked for an Inner City primary school in Derby, supporting the management team with a variety of employee relations issues. She is also Vice Chair of Governors at a different primary school where she is a member of Personnel and Curriculum; Pay and Head Teachers Performance committees.
Sara will be supporting DDAT schools across the range of employment issues throughout the employment lifecycle, from recruitment to retirement and all employee relations issues which sit in-between. She will also work alongside DDAT colleagues and our employment solicitors to develop effective Human Resources processes, policies and procedures which support our academies to achieve best practice, whilst protecting them from the risk of litigation. Sara has been subject to enhanced DBS disclosures.
Finance Manager: Pat Mosley
Pat joined the Derby Diocesan Academy Trust’s Finance Team in the early part of 2017. He holds a full AAT Finance Qualification and has over 16 years’ experience of supporting Derbyshire Schools.
During his time with Derbyshire he was responsible for producing and monitoring budget plans for Schools within the Nursery, Primary, Special and Secondary sectors. Pat has an excellent knowledge of school funding, and in particular, he has significant experience in assisting and advising schools which are facing financial challenges.
Pat has also played a key role in the recent implementation of a new finance system in the schools, alongside developing systems to ensure the close monitoring of budgets, so that both the Trust and the Schools have a clear understanding of their financial position. Pat has been subject to enhanced DBS disclosures.
School Improvement Consultant: Clare Cossor
Prior to joining Ofsted as an HMI in April 2014, she had extensive experience of leading professional development in other schools, early years provisions and educational services. She provided support and training for leaders and practitioners through her work as a LLE and Local Authority Early Years Advisory Teacher and a nationally accredited trainer for the National Portage Association. Other aspects of her work have included action research around communication systems for children with special educational needs and contributions to national publications regarding working with parents.
She has been subject to an enhanced DBS check dated September 2016 and has the necessary liability insurances.
School Improvement Consultant: Joanne Harvey
Joanne Harvey joined Ofsted as an HMI in 2010. She is a qualified teacher. She regularly leads inspections of schools in the maintained and independent sectors and inspections of children’s centres. She has particular expertise in inspecting schools causing concern and the Early Years Foundation Stage. Prior to joining Ofsted, she had extensive experience of inspection in a range of settings in the UK and overseas, and has provided professional leadership for inspectors. She has worked internationally as a school improvement consultant and trainer, and held senior management positions, including headship, in primary schools. Joanne has been subject to enhanced DBS disclosures.
School Improvement Consultant: Phil Harrison
Phil is the Director of Special Schools and Deputy Director of Education Quality, Standards and Training at Shaw Academy Trust. We are extremely grateful that Shaw Academy Trust allow us to deploy Phil in our DDAT schools.
Previously Phil was one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors. Phil had a regional lead responsibility for special educational needs and disability. Prior to working for Ofsted, Phil gained extensive senior management experience as a headteacher and executive headteacher of day schools, residential schools and colleges. Phil has worked as a local authority school improvement partner and as a leadership trainer for the National College. During his time as a National Leader of Education he led and managed a National Support School and Teaching School, alongside being the chair of a governing board. He has a postgraduate qualification in special and inclusive education. Phil has been subject to enhanced DBS disclosures.
